Physiotherapists combine in-depth knowledge of how the body works with specialized hands-on clinical skills to assess, diagnose and treat symptoms of illness, injury or disability.

Your physiotherapy assessment may include measures of body functions, strength and range of motion testing, and observational analysis of gait, posture, balance, and functional movement. Your physiotherapist will work with you to determine your goals and establish an individualized treatment plan. A physiotherapist’s goal is to maximize your strength, function, movement and overall well-being.

Your physiotherapist will use a variety of treatment techniques including manual therapy, soft tissue mobilization, and exercise prescription. Modalities such as ultrasound, acupuncture and TENS may also be used to reduce pain and promote tissue healing. In most cases, an important aspect of physiotherapy treatment is education. Your physiotherapist will teach you about your condition, things to avoid, how to exercise properly and how to speed up your recovery.

By combining the principles of evidence-based practise, evaluative skills, clinical and professional judgement, your physiotherapist will teach you how to prevent or manage your health condition. Your physiotherapist will work with you to help you understand your body and ensure that your health goals are met.
